Flip Flops in the Sand

September 8, 2009
I made this cake for my Mother on her birthday. This is my favorite cake I've done so far. It was also the easiest and most enjoyable! The flip flop strap is laffy taffy, but can also be made with Gum Paste. This is a lemon cake with a sweetened cream cheese frosting. Those are two fresh flowers. The sand is made out of crushed gram crackers. Yes, my mistake was making two right feet!

Bicycle Cake

I am unhappy with this cake. It wasn't difficult, it was time consuming. Time I didn't have, it was a rushed job. The tires were suppose to be white (on top), obvious when looking at a bicycle. I used thick buttercream frosting, making each individual star using a tip and pastry bag.

This cake was a challenge for me. This was my first experience with this type of fondant. I made home made Marshmallow Fondant. This is tricky, but absolutely delicious. Underneath the fondant is a layer of buttercream frosting. The Marshmallow Fondant is 'moist' unlike traditional fondant. However, it is not a pure white like traditional. It is sweet and well textured. Topped with fresh flowers. Each cake layer is separated with buttercream frosting.

This was my first experience using Gum Paste. I over worked the paste when adding coloring, as a result, it over hardened. I now know how to fix this!
